“Be still and know that I am God” is a popular verse found in Psalm 46:10. I admit, I am a “real looker” – no, not physically. I enjoy just sitting still, experiencing the beautiful creation and absorbing God’s presence. I spoke with friends who say they can never be “real lookers.” They find it difficult just to sit still.
Their comments made me study the psalm and I realize there is so much more to this command than being physically immobile.
It is a call to trust in God and find peace in his presence, even when life is chaotic.
Be still: The Hebrew word rapa is translated as "still" and means "to slacken, let down, or cease". We are to stop striving or forcing our own expectations into our lives. It means:
Surrender to God and His control
Wait on God as an act of obedience
Let down and stop frantic activity
Take a moment to pray and reflect on what God wants for you
Use this time to develop patience and seek God more in prayer and praise
Remember that because God loves you, His plans for you are perfect
Know that I am God: We are to acknowledge and be aware of God's presence. We should:
Remember that God is in control, no matter what happens in our lives
Thank God for what we have
Seek spiritual strength and guidance from God
Reflect on who God is
Recognize your dependence upon God
Refrain from needless fear and worry
Say aloud or think, “Here I am Lord, ready to hear from You”
We do not have to be physically still, but we can practice stillness
Find a quiet place
Remove distractions
Take deep, calming breaths
Keep a journal
Pray
Meditate on scripture
Listen to worship music
Take a prayer, meditation walk
Turn off, do not answer notifications
Listen to the Bible or Christian podcast
I will continue to be a “real looker” and now my time will be even better
