The 2024 Olympics just concluded. I always jokingly make this statement when I see exceptional world class athletes perform, “They are proof of alien life on earth. No human can do what they do.”
The athleticism, sheer physical strength, and perfect routines of women’s gymnastics gold medal winner Simone Biles are amazing beyond what anyone would expect is possible. Kevin Durant effortlessly making eight 3 pointers in a row in the first men’s basketball game makes one chuckle. The speed Carlos Alcaraz possesses to cover the tennis court and the talent he has to make seemingly impossible shots look easy just makes you shake your head in disbelief. The unbelievable strength, speed, and grace of track and field sprinters is unreal while the endurance of long-distance runners in beyond comprehension. It is unbelievable that they can run close to 5-minute miles for 26 continuous miles.
Yes, I understand they are not aliens. It is also evident that all people are not created equal when it comes to athletic performance. World class athletes must possess three characteristics. An incredible giftedness of athletic talent; an exceptional work ethic; the focus to be mentally tough. It is a pleasure for us to be able to watch and appreciate such amazing performances. I look at them and ask myself, “How can they do that?”
The Olympics are over. It was a treat to watch the incredible God given talent of the Olympic athletes on display. It is also incredible to know we have a God given love for us that will never go away. This love is a gift from God. It is a blessing for us to understand we do not have to be exceptional to be loved by God. All people, regardless, of athletic ability- or any characteristic- are equally loved by God. I reflect on God and ask myself, “How can God love us so much?” He created us in His image. Regardless of our athletic gifts, we all have the gift of life. He created a beautiful world for us to live in. Most incredibly, these gifts of life and love are free gifts from God. We all know the most quoted verse in the Bible, John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son.”
We do not have to put in years of effort like Olympic athletes to earn God’s love. God just simply asks us to love Him back.
